Theme of the Issue:
A lively and continuous dialogue between history and modernity, which is one of the main features of the theatrical process itself and which forms the basis of the methodological principle to the «Problems of Theatre» journal, can be called the meaning for this number. One of the central topics linked to the fate of the plays once forbidden for the national stage, and to the interest shown to them by a number of major Moscow theaters, simultaneously included them in their repertoire in the last season. A number of materials devoted to the Moscow Kamerny Theatre, 100-anniversary of the Foundation of which was celebrated last year. Along with archival materials that reveal the unknown pages of the life and work of Aleksandr Tairov and Alisa Koonen, the journal publishes contemporary researches on so important to this legendary troupe questions as searching the style of the epoch and as poetics of different productions of Kamerny. The traditional section «Theatrical diary» is devoted to the attempts to determine the stage style of modern theatre. It includes reviews on the 20 performances of the Moscow theatres (as an academic, with a rich history, and relatively recent), largely determining the face of the theatrical process and its pronounced genre and stylistic diversity. The theme of the interchanges of the epochs and traditions is continued in the portrait-study analyzing the «later years» in the works of Peter Brook, one of the absolutely key figures for a modern stage, and in a number of materials associated with the current work of the State Maly Theatre (the analysis of two recent premiers is accompanied with an article devoted to Yuri Solomin, it’s Artistic Director), offering a new perspective on the modern stage in the history of the celebrated Moscow theatre.
